Hydration vs. Moisture

Hydration vs. Moisture

Definition (cosmetic use): Hydration refers to water content and movement in the skin’s surface layers; moisture refers to lipids that help slow water escape and keep the surface comfortable.

Synonyms: water balance, lipid balance Related: TEWL, skin barrier, humectant, emollient

What’s the practical difference?

  • Hydration = water. Think humectants and water-phase antioxidants that support a fresh, flexible feel.
  • Moisture = lipids. Think balanced oils that smooth feel and help reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
  • Most complexions look and feel best when both are addressed in sequence: hydrate first, then seal with lightweight lipids.

Layering & Compatibility

  • AM: Hydrate with a water-phase serum, then finish with a light oil-serum. Follow with sunscreen.
  • PM: After cleansing, use your treatment serums, then finish with a lipid step for overnight comfort.
  • Humectants pair well with emollients; avoid heavy occlusives if you prefer a breathable, non-film finish.

Used in OUMERE

  • UV-R — water-phase hydration with botanical support (AM).
  • UV-R Concentrate — nightly hydration support after treatment serums (PM).
  • Serum Bioluminelle — dual-phase finishing serum to seal hydration with a light, non-occlusive feel (AM).
  • Serum Bioluminelle Concentrate — concentrated lipid finish for overnight comfort and radiance (PM).
