Hydration vs. Moisture
Definition (cosmetic use): Hydration refers to water content and movement in the skin’s surface layers; moisture refers to lipids that help slow water escape and keep the surface comfortable.
What’s the practical difference?
- Hydration = water. Think humectants and water-phase antioxidants that support a fresh, flexible feel.
- Moisture = lipids. Think balanced oils that smooth feel and help reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
- Most complexions look and feel best when both are addressed in sequence: hydrate first, then seal with lightweight lipids.
Layering & Compatibility
- AM: Hydrate with a water-phase serum, then finish with a light oil-serum. Follow with sunscreen.
- PM: After cleansing, use your treatment serums, then finish with a lipid step for overnight comfort.
- Humectants pair well with emollients; avoid heavy occlusives if you prefer a breathable, non-film finish.
